Living Through It

In today’s emotionally charged climate, feelings of anxiety may be heightened, and the relentless news cycle and social media feeds can activate our nervous systems in ways that create ongoing stress. It’s important to take intentional steps to care for your emotional and mental well-being.

Here are a few practices to help you stay grounded:

1. Listen to Your Body’s Signals: Be aware of physical and emotional cues that may indicate increased stress. Notice any changes in your sleep patterns (sleeping more or less than usual), energy levels, and mood. You may feel disconnected from things you once enjoyed, withdrawn from social interactions, or a lingering sense of dread. If you find yourself constantly checking the news or unable to “shake off” a low mood, these may be signs your system is on high alert and could benefit from a pause.

2. Take Intentional Time to Unplug: Decide on specific times during the day to consume news or social media and limit your total time to reduce the impact on your well-being. Instead of scrolling in the morning or before bed, schedule one brief window for news or updates and avoid devices outside that time. Set aside a few moments to step outside, take a walk, or enjoy a quiet space to help regulate your mind and body.

3. Practice Grounding Techniques: When you feel overwhelmed, use grounding exercises to bring you back to the present moment. Deep breathing, mindfulness to help reset your nervous system. Even a few minutes of deep, slow breathing can counteract anxiety and tension.

4. Lean into Your Support Network: Connecting with friends and family in meaningful ways can provide comfort and perspective. Make space for meaningful conversations that uplift you, rather than focusing solely on current events or sources of stress. Sharing your feelings and listening to others can be healing and grounding.

5. Prioritize Rejuvenating Activities: Make time for activities that rejuvenate you, whether it’s a hobby, listening to music, dancing, etc. A few minutes of something you enjoy daily can make a difference.
