Becoming

kerry-1.jpgHaving the right perspective is paramount in anything we desire to do and changes we are seeking to make. A skewed perspective can cause barriers and long delays in your process and progress. For a long time I would beat myself up mentally and emotionally because I thought I should be further along by now, in my career, spiritual life, goals, dreams you get the point. Having that perspective however hampered my ability to understand that nothing I have gone through (good, bad, ugly, indifferent) whether of my own doing or because of others will not and should not be wasted. That ultimately every experience, setback, disappointment, heart ache, victories etc is all part of the process; my process of Becoming. Becoming what you may ask? The simple answer is a better version of myself. Sounds simple enough but that task becomes extremely difficult when our measurement for success or fulfillment is based on measuring our lives with the lives and accomplishment of others. Rather than seeking to be a better version of ourselves. Faulty measures such as comparisons only set us up for further disappointment and discontentment in our lives. I can never be a better version of someone else, simply because I am not them.

Here is a radical concept: We are no greater or less than one another. Many could argue the point that, yes they are indeed better than some by listing a whole host of horrible things that have been done by other people. And the fact is there are a lot of horrible things that have been done by people. But if our stance is at least I am not them…then the original point is valid. When our focus of achievement is based on comparisons it is short lived, a fleeting sense of moral superiority and accomplishment. It is ineffective and irrelevant to helping us focus on becoming better.

In the process of becoming, there will be moments where you will desire “your normal” rather than work through the temporary discomfort associated with transformation. However, the will to  emerge into a better version of yourself must stay in the forefront of your thinking and outweigh the desire to revert back to what is comfortable.  Life will give opportunities that will seem most inconvenient to develop us in areas we’ve long to be developed in. Do not miss the opportunity when it knocks  for you to be stretched in your thinking/doing and grow to be a better you. Change requires consistency and action! Be patient and kind to yourself  and stay open in this process.
